Students tuned into the unit ‘Migration’ under the transdisciplinary theme “Where are we in place and time” through an interesting activity. When they returned after the vacations, their classrooms were locked and they were asked to find a place within school premises where they could move. Later, they discussed the reasons why they were reluctant to move to a new place.
Students also read the story ‘Grandfather’s Journey’ and discussed the pros and cons of migration.
They worked on case studies in groups and created a T-chart of the various push and pull factors and watched a video. They also marked the places discussed in the case studies on the world map created on the classroom floor. Students inquired about why people migrate from rural to urban areas and created a mind map of the opportunities and challenges faced by people who migrate to cities.
In English, students were narrated a story, “When Jessie Came Across the Sea.” The reading sessions were integrated with UOI, whereby the stories revealed concepts related to migration. The students discussed the challenges and opportunities faced by the characters in the stories when they migrated to other places. Following this, they showcased their understanding of the story through writing a summary. In Art, students inquired about the artist ‘Claude Monet’ and observed the impact of his migration on his artwork.
To give students a sneak peek into the concept of “similes,” an essential component of creative writing, they were shown a video of the song, ‘Everything at once.’ Once they grasped the concept, they brainstormed about the use of similes in stories and poems. Later, through a fun activity, they created similes for an imaginary person.
