The new academic year started with students getting to know each other through various icebreaker activities. They enhanced their social skills by collectively brainstorming and creating essential agreements to be followed in class.
We started our first unit on ‘Waste’ under the Trans-disciplinary theme ‘Sharing the planet’. Provocation to the unit was done by the students visiting five different stations to analyse different things related to waste. Students were introduced to the Central idea which was followed by an activity wherein the students wrote their understanding of the central idea. They differentiated between needs and wants, to understand that the increasing wants are creating waste on our planet which was followed by research on the different types of waste and a presentation of their work to the class.
Students attempted a formative assessment on 1st line of inquiry through a doughnut activity where they wrote three most important points related to ‘kinds of waste’. Thereafter they watched a video to further understand the various waste disposal methods.
In ICT, students revisited the technique of forming a keyword for an assigned topic and searched for information on google. They downloaded images on e-waste and using these images created an audio visual presentation on Photostory 3.
In English, children watched "Jarvis the Jelly" - a video related to the learner profiles they wrote the learner profile that best fitted the characters and gave an explanation for the same. The students also revisited certain concepts done previously in grade 2 - The concept of proper and common nouns was reinforced through various activities and written practice along with enhancement of comprehension using the skimming and scanning technique.
In Math, students recalled their previous knowledge of numbers and place value through manipulatives, games and “Deck of cards” activity. They were introduced to the concept of successor and predecessor. Practice of number names, expanded notation and odd/even was done through written work.
In Hindi classes, students discussed essential agreements and learner profile through stories like 'Imaandaar lakadhara' and 'Rajkumar aur neem ka paudha'. They understood 'how glass is made' by watching a video and wrote the procedure in their own words. They learnt and recited the poem 'Kaanch' and wrote new words and 'paryaayvaachee shabd' (synonyms) from the same. They also wrote names of things made out of 'kaanch' (glass) and their usage.
